ABOUT
Welcome to EXPO Elementary!
EXPO offers a friendly, happy environment filled with student artwork that welcomes one and all. EXPO is a lively school with an extraordinary range of resources.
Our teachers use the Science of Reading approach to help students build a strong literacy foundation through explicit phonics instruction, word recognition and language comprehension.
At EXPO, students learn not just academics but also social and emotional skills. We have a strong social-emotional program where our counselors create and teach lessons in classrooms that focus on healthy mindset and behaviors that support student mental, social/emotional and physical well-being.
School-wide, we offer specialist teachers for accelerated math, physical education, art, music and science. We also emphasize projects in arts, science, and technology/engineering.
Your child's experience at Expo will include:
- A leadership year in grade 5, in which our oldest students take on greater responsibility.
- Specialist classes: physical education, art, music, and science
- Music programs: music residencies, a partnership with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and after-school music classes and lessons.
- Treasure Island: The “best playground in the city," built and maintained by parents for the school and neighborhood.
- Discovery Club: Onsite afterschool program that offers flexibility in scheduling for families, and enhances students' social, academic, and play opportunities.
Top 5 Reasons to Attend EXPO Elementary
EXPO Elementary offers students an ideal learning environment built upon strong academic foundations and a commitment to collaborative community building. Our academic approach utilizes the Science of Reading framework for literacy, implementing UFLI Phonics in grades K–2 and the F.I.R.E. Framework in grades 3–5 to accelerate all students toward grade-level reading proficiency. For Math, the HMH curriculum is used to emphasize deep conceptual development, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. Our comprehensive program is further enhanced by dedicated Specialists in Art, Music, Gym, Advanced Math, and Science, with a strong emphasis on outdoor education.
Our dedication to Excellence in Teaching is evident in our staff. EXPO teachers are skilled, collaborative, and deeply committed, bringing learning to life for every student. Our educators focus on building strong relationships, using effective teaching practices, and creating classroom environments where students feel supported, challenged, and inspired to do their best work.
We believe in a Strong Partnership with Families, which is fundamental to our success. The active EXPO Council of Parents and Teachers (EXPO CPT) helps create a vibrant school community by hosting engaging events throughout the year, including Movie Night, Dance Night, the Silent Auction, Bingo Night, the Book Fair, the Coin Challenge, and our annual Good in the Hood Event.
Crucial to our environment is Social–Emotional Learning. EXPO staff work together to create a supportive environment where students can grow both academically and emotionally. We utilize Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), the Zones of Regulation, Playworks, and Positive Greetings to help students build essential skills such as managing emotions, showing empathy, and developing strong relationships.
Finally, we offer rich Enrichment and Extracurriculars. Our program includes Enrichment Residencies in Science and Art, and partnerships with Midwest Food Connections, and more. A significant highlight is the week-long Boundary Waters Camp Adventure for all 5th graders. We also foster engagement through Community Education Classes, such as Band (grades 4–5), Piano, Chess, Ballet, and Lightsaber Fencing (with offerings varying yearly). For families needing afternoon care, we provide on-site after-school childcare through Discovery Club.
