| | | | | EXPO Elementary Band | | | | Standard of Excellence by Bruce Pearson | EXPO Elementary's band program is open to 5th and 6th graders. No previous music experience is necessary to join. Space is limited.
Recruitment and sign up happens the first week of September. For school year 2008-2009, band sign up meetings will be held with all 5th & 6th grade students during the school day during the first week of September. Sign up slips come home with interested students that day. Sign up slips are also available at Open House and from the band teacher.
Sign up slips are due to the school office/Mr. Stripling's box no later than the end of the first week of September. Band spots are assigned on a first come/first serve basis by each day (not time on each day). Priority is given to returning band students, then new 6th grade students, then new 5th grade students. A waiting list will be established if band enrollment reaches capacity.
In band, we offer the opportunity to play flute, clarinet, trumpet, alto saxophone, trombone and percussion (bells & drums).
Each student works at their own pace. The first half of this year we are studying from a workbook called Kodaly for Band. Our spring assignments will be from the more traditional system in the band textbook Standard of Excellence by Bruce Pearson. Students are required to practice 15-20 minutes each day at home (total of 2 hours per week). At school there is a once a week 30 minute group lesson and once a week 50 minute large group rehearsal. Students will miss regularly scheduled class during these times.
There are 23 school instruments available for student use in the band program. Two-thirds of the instruments go to students who qualify for free and reduced lunch. The rest of the instruments are assigned on a first-come first-served basis every fall. Repairs are the responsibility of the family.
